WHICH COLOURS SUIT ME?

Which Colours Suit Me? A Simple Guide to Colour Analysis

If you've ever stood in front of your wardrobe wondering why nothing feels quite right, even though it's technically "your size" and "in style," you've probably typed some version of this into Google: *which colours suit me?*

It's one of the most common questions I get asked, and the good news is, there's a real, physical answer to it. It's not about trends. It's not about what's "in" this season. It's about how certain colours interact with your natural colouring, and once you know your palette, getting dressed stops being a guessing game.

Here's the simple version of how it works, and how you can start figuring out your own answer today.

It's Not Your Imagination, It's Physics

Some colours genuinely make you look brighter, healthier and more awake. Others do the opposite; they can wash you out, add years to your face, or make you look tired even when you've had a great night's sleep.

This isn't a stylist being fussy or precious about colour. It comes down to how a colour reflects light back onto your skin. The right shades bounce light up into your face and give you that "did you get some sun?" glow. The wrong ones pull the colour and life out of your complexion.

Colour analysis is simply the process of identifying which shades do the flattering thing for you, specifically, based on your own natural colouring, rather than guessing or following whatever's on the mannequin.

The Orange Test: A Simple Place to Start

One of the quickest ways to start noticing this for yourself is what I call the orange test.

Grab something orange, a top, a scarf, even a piece of paper, and hold it up close to your face in natural light. Look closely at your skin.

- Does your skin look more golden, warm and glowing?

- Or does it start to look a little grey, dull, or almost bruised?

That reaction is a genuine clue to your undertone, which is one of the biggest pieces of the colour puzzle. It's a simple test you can do at home, and it often surprises people how obvious the difference is once they know what to look for.

Undertone is only one part of the full picture though. Your natural depth (how light or deep your overall colouring is) and your contrast level (how much difference there is between your hair, skin and eyes) matter just as much. That's the part that takes a trained eye to map properly, because it's easy to get half the picture right and still end up in the wrong palette.

Why "Just Wear What You Like" Doesn't Always Work

I hear this a lot: "I just wear what I like and what's comfortable." And I love that instinct. But there's a difference between a colour you like and a colour that likes you back.

You can genuinely love a shade of green and still find that it's fighting against your natural colouring every time you put it on. That's usually the moment someone tells you "you look tired today" when you're not tired at all, you're just wearing a colour that's working against you rather than for you.

Once you know your palette, this problem basically disappears. You stop second-guessing outfits. You stop buying things that seemed great in the shop and then never leave the wardrobe. You start reaching for colours that consistently get you compliments, because they're doing the work of making you look well, awake and put together before you've even done anything else.

What Happens Once You Know Your Palette

This is the part my clients love most. Once you know your palette:

- Shopping gets faster, because you're not sifting through everything, just the shades that actually work for you

- Getting dressed in the morning stops being a debate

- You build a wardrobe where things actually mix and match, because everything sits within the same flattering colour family

- You get real, unprompted compliments, not just "nice outfit" but "you look amazing, what have you done?"

It's a small shift with a genuinely big flow-on effect, because when you know you look good, you carry yourself differently. That's really the whole point of colour analysis: not a rulebook for what you're "allowed" to wear, but a shortcut to feeling confident in your own skin.

Ready to Find Your Palette?

The orange test is a great starting point, but it only tells part of the story. If you're ready to know your full palette, undertone, depth, intensity and the exact colours that make you look effortlessly put together, that's exactly what I help women work out every day.

You can start with a **Colour Snapshot**, a simple online colour analysis you can do from home, or come in for a full in-studio session here in Doreen. Either way, you'll walk away finally knowing the answer to that question you've been Googling.
